Society Annual General Meeting
| Monday 11th March
|| Wetherby Social Club
|| A talk about Leeds City Varieties
| Thursday 18th April
|| Leeds Library, Commercial St., Leeds
|| The Leeds Library is a wonderful mix of the old and the new, located at the very heart of a busy shopping centre. It was founded in 1768 as a proprietary subscription library and is now the oldest surviving example of its kind in the British Isles Having visited the 21st century British Library in Boston Spa, it should be interesting to compare this with the beautiful interior of the Commercial Street Library.
| Thursday 16th May
|| The National Coal Mining Museum, Wakefield
|| In 2012 we visited Drax Power Station where we saw what happened to the coal after it had been delivered from the coal mines. This outing takes us to the National Coal Mining Museum where we can go underground and see where the coal was mined. We will have a guided tour underground, hard hats but plenty of head space, and there are a number of museums and displays at ground level which we will be able to explore in our own time.
| Wednesday 5th or 12th June
|| The Archbishop’s Palace, York
|| Bishopthorpe Palace has been the home of the Archbishops of York for more than 750 years. Our visit will include a guided tour of the Palace, refreshments and time to look round the grounds.
| Monday 15th July
|| Thackray Medical Museum, in St. James’ Hospital, Leeds
|| The members who visited Littlethorpe Gardens in 2012 will recall that the house and gardens belong to the Thackray family, a name well known in medical circles. Our visit to the Medical Museum, founded by the Thackray Family, will give us a look behind the scenes — at some of the things which are stored in a museum but never seen. The museum was originally a workhouse and later became part of St. James’ Hospital. We will have a guided tour followed by refreshments.
| Tuesday 6th August
|| Leeds Cities Varieties Theatre, The Headrow, Leeds
|| The City Varieties has recently undergone a large refurbishment to return it to its Victorian splendour. It is the oldest music hall theatre in the North of England. Our guided tour will, hopefully, include a look behind the curtains, as well as a tour of the front of the house.
|| It is hoped that an acceptable lunch can be provided at Leeds Grand Theatre but details will be given with the booking form.
November 2013. November 11th is the date for the AGM at 7.30pm. The venue is the Wetherby Social Club on Sandbeck Way
