Welcome to our timeline sliders, in 2011 The Wetherby Historical Trust realised that although there was a lot of published information about events that have happened in the history of Wetherby there was no single point of reference so it decided to compile a file listing the event, the date and source of the information.

Wetherby mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Wedrebi” when it was first owned by the Percy family.

1140AD

Wetherby Castle constructed (illegally) by the Percy Family

1155AD

Wetherby Castle dismantled on the orders of Henry II

1233AD

Walter de Gray, Archbishop of York, allowed an indulgence, a remission of punishment for sins committed, to those who contributed financially to the building of Wetherby bridge

1238AD

Knights Templar gifted the mill at Wetherby by William de Denby

1240AD

Knights Templars granted Royal Charter by Henry III to hold market. Mentioned as “Werribi”

1312AD

Templars suppressed. Inventory of their property showed two mills at Wetherby

Wetherby ransacked by Earl of Moray’s Scots

1324AD

The Pope abolished the Order of Knights Templars and their holdings in Wetherby were handed over to the Knights of St John of Jerusalem.

Sir Thos. Rockeby the Sheriff of York prevented the Earl of Northumberland coming through Wetherbie

1540AD

Knights of St John of Jerusalem dissolved at the Reformation and their possessions transferred to the Crown. Three water mills at Wetherby

1552AD

King Edward VI granted Manor of Wetherby to John Dudley Duke of Northumberland.

1569AD

The Earl of Northumberland marched through Wetherby with 5,000 foot and 2,000 horse soldiers and encamped on Clifford Moor.

West Riding Quarter Sessions first come to Wetherby. Held in a room in North Street.

1602AD

Queen Elizabeth I bestowed the Manor of Wetherby to Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury. She settle it on her son William Cavendish later Earl of Devonshire

7th December skirmish between Parliamentarians and Royalists in Wetherby. Parliamentarians victorious

July before marching to Marston More the Parliamentarians spent two days in Wetherby

To fund work on Chatsworth House the Duke of Devonshire sold the ‘entirety of Wetherby.’

Notice advertising the contract for the widening of Wetherby Bridge comprising 4 arches of 40ft & 2 arches of 24ft to be let on 19th October in Knaresborough

Wetherby bridge widened to 15ft 6ins

30th October Wetherby Methodist Chapel opened
