Black Bull

BlackBull

The Dictionary of Pub Names states “Black is a very common colour as far as pub names are concerned, occurring in at least fifty different names. The Bull is an ancient and widespread sign, which may have begun by referring to a papal bull.”

In the SALE OF WETHERBY, on Monday 11 October 1824, LOT 59 was listed in the Sale catalogue as follows –

The BLACK BULL Public House, near the Chapel, with Yard behind, extending to the Back Lane, comprising Soldiers Room and Chamber over, open Stable for Seven Horses, and other Stables.
